Cameron County is working to reduce jail overcrowding after state inspectors found the county’s jail in violation in April.

Sheriff Manuel Trevino said Tuesday that his office has been talking with local judges and the D.A.’s office to address the situation. The state prison has been removing inmates from the jail, and the Sheriff’s Office is not accepting Class B arrests for non-violent crimes right now.

The Sheriff’s Office has not requested a reinspection from the State Department of Jail Standards, but Trevino said he will do so when he feels the jail is ready.
