Governor Abbott has ordered the Texas Health and Human Services Commission to investigate Mission Regional Medical Center.
The investigation will reportedly center on the center’s use of “birth packages” to lure international visitors to the facility. Abbott said the practice has led to “birth tourism,” which he described as a way that foreign nationals try to obtain U.S. citizenship for their children.
The hospital released a statement yesterday saying it no longer uses the marketing materials outlined by the governor, and that it does not support or facilitate any unlawful activity.
