A flesh-eating insect called the New World Screwworm has been detected less than one hour south of the Texas border with Mexico. Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller says it’s not a matter “if” it’s coming here… but “when.” He says the USDA has started sending farmers and ranchers a “screwworm detection kit.” When a cow gets sick from the parasitic fly, they’re supposed to send a sample back to D.C.
Cochliomyia hominivorax, the New World screw-worm fly, or screw-worm for short, is a species of parasitic fly that is well known for the way in which its larvae (maggots) eat the living tissue. (Shutterstock)
