A Navy sailor has been sentenced to 44 years in prison after pleading guilty to killing a Brownsville native. Petty Officer Jermiah Copeland was sentenced Tuesday by a military judge in Virginia. He’ll also be dishonorably discharged and required to register as a sex offender when he’s released from prison.
Copeland admitted to killing Petty Officer Angelina Resendiz by strangling her in his barracks room at Naval Station Norfolk last year. Her body was found 11 days later in a wooded area a few miles away. He pleaded guilty to murder and other charges on Monday.
