Joint Base San Antonio may soon be partially powered by a small on-site nuclear reactor. The US Air Force announced Wednesday that JBSA had been selected as the third potential location for a nuclear microreactor.

The idea is to bring an advanced nuclear reactor online on at least one Air Force post by 2030. Antares Nuclear says its microreactor is about the size of a pickup truck and generates about a megawatt of power, enough to light up about 250 homes on a hot day. Antares hopes to test its first electricity-producing reactor next year.
